Axiomatics: Leading the charge in authorization innovation
How we began as a small team of researchers to emerge as an innovator in access control, paving a bold path for the future.
The beginnings of Axiomatics
Back in 2006, a small team of researchers in Sweden saw that the existing access control models would not satisfy the new requirements from more open internet based business to business applications. Those access control models were all built on a static view of permissions whereas the new B2B applications required a more dynamic view of permissions. After months of research, the team was ready to embark on a bold new path.
That’s how Axiomatics was born. Our vision was clear, and just two years later, a contract with a healthcare-focused enterprise gave us the boost we needed to fully dive into this new venture.
Navigating unfamiliar waters
In the early days, Axiomatics was a trailblazer in a world still getting used to the idea of attribute-based access control (ABAC). At the time, role-based access control (RBAC) was the industry norm, and we faced an uphill battle convincing others that ABAC was the way forward. It wasn’t just about building the technology; it was about educating the market. But we embraced the challenge, positioning our solutions as a way of enforcing complex authorization and tackling the administration burden of doing it with RBAC.
This early mission is still something we aspire to achieve and is at the core of everything we do.
Milestones that shaped our journey
As Axiomatics continued to grow, we began achieving monumental steps that solidified our role as industry leaders. Our early successes in the U.S. helped establish our reputation, but we didn’t stop there. With an eye on the global market, we steadily expanded, balancing our presence across Europe and North America. Every product release, every new feature was a response to our customers evolving needs, showing that Axiomatics wasn’t just about creating software — it was about creating solutions that work in the real world.
Evolving with the times
Listening to customers has been at the heart of our evolution — we love to boast about how our customers stay with us for the long haul because we work hard to earn their trust and be a part of their success.
Our customers have helped shape our deployment methodology, engagement playbook, and conversations have led to innovations like the Contextual Authorization Query (CAQ) feature, which is a powerful solution to streamline entitlement reviews and enhance data filtering in applications.
We’ve also expanded our portfolio to include APIs and SAP, always pushing the boundaries of what authorization can do.
Additionally, with the rise of AI, Axiomatics is once again pursuing how to fill the gaps with an AI-powered tool, Policy Companion to make life easier between developer, security, and business users.
What sets Axiomatics apart?
It’s not just the technology that makes Axiomatics unique — it’s the versatility and adaptability of our solutions. Whether it’s privacy, export control, or any other use case, Axiomatics has spent nearly two decades working to innovate how our approach works, whether for simple or complex applications. In a world where access control is increasingly critical, Axiomatics stands out as a trusted partner, ready to meet any challenge head-on.
Not only do we meet challenges head-on, but we’re also at the front lines of communication within the industry. David Brossard, our Chief Technology Officer, plays a vital role as part of the AuthZEN Working Group within the OpenID Foundation.
This group’s focus is to tackle the complexities of authorization, to promote decoupling and externalizing authorization logic from applications, and to simplify the implementation of a robust authorization layer that can be edited and audited with ease.
Recently, the AuthZEN Working Group achieved significant interoperability results, further demonstrating our commitment to driving the industry forward and ensuring that Axiomatics remains at the forefront of secure, scalable, and flexible access control solutions.
Looking to the future
The future holds both exciting opportunities and new challenges. With new software delivery paradigms, such as Platform Engineering, we see the importance of externalized authorization as one of the essential services centralized to support application developers. We see externalized authorization as the future, even if it’s not quite mainstream yet. As regulatory landscapes shift, more organizations will need the kinds of solutions we offer — and we’re ready to help them transition smoothly.
What’s next?
Axiomatics isn’t just waiting for the future — we’re actively shaping it. One of our biggest upcoming projects is a centralized interface that will make managing the lifecycle of authorization policies easier than ever before. This software solution is designed to guide users through the entire policy lifecycle, offering a seamless experience.
And as always, customer feedback will continue to drive internal innovation, ensuring that our products are as dynamic as the market we serve.
By blending expertise with our core value of putting customers first, Axiomatics isn’t just part of the future of authorization — we’re helping to shape it.
