Perspectives on Authorization in 2024 with Babak Sadighi

Babak Sadighi discusses some access control highlights in 2023 and what his predictions are for access control and authorization in 2024.

I recently sat down with Babak Sadighi, founder and Head of Strategy to discuss some access control highlights in 2023 and what his predictions are for access control and authorization in 2024.

What were the biggest moments in 2023 for access control?

The uptake in AI was a big thing not only in access control, but in the world in general.

For access control, the biggest moment was the flood of new entrants to the market. This shows that there is a real appetite for these solutions, which is great to see. However, I was surprised that there weren’t more mergers in the market than what we saw happen.

Lastly, we have seen the identity and access management (IAM) market move from big players to middle market players. It is interesting that it has happened and I am interested to see if it is going to change back to that at some point.

What are your predictions for access control in 2024?

There will be a movement in the security of AI. Currently, everyone wants to use AI, but we will start to see people wanting privacy and security using AI. It is like when the internet first started –  no one thought about the security issues around that. It was an afterthought.

In 2024, I could also see some of those newcomers to the access control disappearing due to a lack of funding, while others will merge or become acquired. Specifically, this will be a huge problem for those who haven’t gotten any customers.

From a technical perspective, the authorization market is going to become more mature and we will see more innovations in the coming years.

Also, I don’t know if this will happen in 2024, 2025 or later, but we may not see Zero Trust as a term – only as a concept. When a term is used by many vendors in many different ways then people don’t really want to hear it or use it to avoid confusions and frustrations.

This doesn’t mean that the concept itself is wrong; rather, the term becomes ineffective, especially as it is muddied by vendors overusing it or misusing it, which we have definitely started to see.

What will be the next big thing in 2024?

Authorization is going to be the big thing in 2024 and it has been a big thing for the past year or two now.

We are going to see more innovation on the authorization side. All of the companies trying to build an identity and access management (IAM) portfolio will start to turn to and invest in authorization solutions. This will be because all other parts of the market are quite mature (IGA, authentication, etc), but authorization is still in its infancy.

There is still a lot of innovation that is required as we need to make solutions more accessible and developer friendly. But there are many other things that we need to do on top of that.

What do you think?
