  5. The authorization market has momentum…here’s why that matters

FAQ

Organizations can reduce manual access management, accelerate onboarding, limit permission creep, simplify offboarding, maintain least-privilege access, and improve consistency across applications throughout the employee lifecycle. These improvements directly address the operational, security, and compliance problems identified in the JML content.

Policy-driven authorization uses attributes to determine access in real time. These attributes can include a user’s department, job title, employment status, location, and other contextual information. As an employee joins, changes roles, or leaves the organization, their attributes are updated and authorization decisions automatically adapt — granting access when the right conditions are met and denying it when they are not.

Common warning signs include new employees waiting days for application access, users retaining permissions after changing teams, temporary access becoming permanent, frequent exceptions, former employees retaining access, excessive permissions appearing during audits, and IAM teams spending significant time manually updating roles.

Traditional JML processes often rely on static roles and manual provisioning. As employees change responsibilities, permissions may not be updated or removed quickly enough, resulting in delayed access, overprovisioning, permission creep, and residual access.

Joiner, Mover, Leaver describes the lifecycle of a user's relationship with an organization:

  • A Joiner is a new employee, contractor, or partner who requires access to systems and resources.
  • A Mover is an existing user whose role, department, project, or responsibilities change.
  • A Leaver is someone whose employment or engagement ends and whose access must be removed.
