FAQ

Relationship-based access control (ReBAC) is an authorization model that determines access based on relationships between entities, such as users, resources, groups, and organizations. For example, a policy might allow a user to view a document because they own it, belong to the same department, or have another defined relationship with the resource.

ReBAC can use direct relationships, such as a user owning a document, as well as indirect relationships, such as a user and a resource belonging to the same department. Other examples include parent-child relationships, group membership, organizational hierarchies, and relationships between users, applications, and resources.

Attribute-based access control (ABAC) makes authorization decisions using attributes about users, resources, actions, and the environment. ReBAC focuses specifically on relationships between entities. ABAC can complement ReBAC by adding contextual conditions — such as resource status, location, time, or risk — that relationships alone may not capture.

Yes. ReBAC and ABAC are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. ReBAC can model relationships between users and resources, while ABAC adds attributes and contextual conditions to those relationships. Combining them enables organizations to create fine-grained, context-aware authorization policies for more complex access requirements.
